This page is devoted to dance classes which accept men. Finding a teacher willing to teach males in classes predominated by females is often a difficult and discouraging experience for men wishing to learn Middle Eastern dance.

Please telephone or email the teacher before trying to join the class. Be prepared to be interviewed by the teacher, as she has the difficult task of ensuring that any male students accepted into the class is there for genuine reasons, as many women are naturally self conscious when learning Raqs Sharqi due to the very nature of the dance.

Please feel free to email Kharis if you have any questions or need clarification about joining a dance class and the dance in general.

Vincent Brignano - captured at a haflah in December 2005. Dressed under duress as a slave master - but he sure looked the part and went down a storm with the ladies!

This essay was written by Helen Waldie, a transexual, who spent three years as a male within the ME Dance community before beginning transition at the beginning of 2004. She has experienced at first hand the barriers to entry erected against males by the majority of the community. For instance, it took her over 50 phone calls to find her first teacher and, although she now has a limited acceptance by the community, her continued experience of widespread discrimination means that she sees no reason to end her fight against prejudice.
